Buena Vista Social Club LP/CD

Bu yazım uzun zamandır yazmak istediğim inanılmaz Buena Vista Social Club hakkında, bu kez önce yazınının İngilizcesi ve sonra Türkçesi aşağıda yer almaktadır. This essay is related to Buena Vista Social Club which I have been wishing to write about since a long time. First you can see English version and after Turkish one below:

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members club in Havana, Cuba that held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play during the 1940s. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity.

The recording, named Buena Vista Social Club after the Havana institution, became an international success, and the ensemble was encouraged to perform with a full line-up in Amsterdam in 1998. German director Wim Wenders captured the performance on film, followed by a second concert in Carnegie Hall, New York City for a documentary that included interviews with the musicians conducted in Havana. Wenders' film, also called Buena Vista Social Club, was released to critical acclaim, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary feature and winning numerous accolades including Best Documentary at the European Film Awards.

The success of both the album and film sparked a revival of international interest in traditional Cuban music and Latin American music in general. Some of the Cuban performers later released well-received solo albums and recorded collaborations with international stars from different musical genres.

The "Buena Vista Social Club" name became an umbrella term to describe these performances and releases, and has been likened to a brand label that encapsulates Cuba's "musical golden age" between the 1930s and 1950s. The new success was fleeting for the most recognizable artists in the ensemble: Compay Segundo, Rubén González, and Ibrahim Ferrer, who died at the ages of ninety-five, eighty-four, and seventy-eight respectively; Segundo and González in 2003, then Ferrer in 2005.

Several surviving members of the Buena Vista Social Club, such as trumpeter Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal, laúd player Barbarito Torres and trombonist and conductor Jesus "Aguaje" Ramos currently tour worldwide, to popular acclaim, with new members such as the singer Carlos Calunga, virtuoso pianist Rolando Luna and occasionally the solo singer Omara Portuondo, as part of a 13 member band called Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club.

Recording:

The album was recorded in just six days and contained fourteen tracks; opening with "Chan Chan" written by Compay Segundo,  and ending with  "La Bayamesa", a traditional Cuban patriotic song . The sessions also produced material for the subsequent release, Introducing...Rubén González, which showcased the work of the Cuban pianist.

Music 

 "Chan Chan", the first song on the album, is a Cuban song composition by Compay Segundo, revolving around two central characters, Juanita and Chan Chan. The song was one of Segundo's last compositions and was written in 1987, already having been recorded by Segundo himself various times.

"El cuarto de Tula" was composed by Gonzales Y Siaba Sergio Eulogio (1916–1989). It is sung by Eliades Ochoa with Ibrahim Ferrer and Manuel "Puntillita" Licea joining Ochoa in an extended descarga (jam) section improvising lyrics. Barbarito Torres plays a frenetic lute solo towards the end of the track. Timbales are played by the 13 year old Julienne Oviedo Sánchez. The song is featured in the film "Training Day" (2001).

And the song is as below, a warm and catchy music and a great vocal..




"Dos gardenias" is a bolero sung by Ibrahim Ferrer. The song was written by Isolina Carrillo in the 1930s and became a huge success in the 1940s. The song was chosen for the album after Cooder heard Ferrer and Rubén González improvising the melody before a recording session. Ferrer learned the song whilst playing with Cuban bandleader Beny Moré.

"¿Y tú qué has hecho?" was written in the 1920s by Eusebio Delfín and features his friend Compay Segundo on tres and vocals. Segundo was traditionally a "second voice" singer providing a baritone counterpoint harmony. On this recording, he multitracks both voices. The song also features a duet between Segundo on tres and Ry Cooder on guitar.

"Veinte años" is a bolero written by María Teresa Vera and is sung on the Buena Vista album by the only female in the ensemble, Omara Portuondo, with Segundo providing baritone.

"El carretero" is a guajira (country lament) sung by Eliades Ochoa with the full ensemble providing additional instruments and backing vocals.

"Candela" is a popular song written by Faustino Oramas with lyrics rich with sexual innuendo. On the album it is sung by Ibrahim Ferrer who improvises vocal lines throughout the track, and the whole ensemble perform an extended descarga.

The title track, "Buena Vista Social Club", was written by bass player Cachaíto’s father, Orestes López. The song spotlights the piano work of Rubén González. It was recorded after Cooder heard González improvising around the tune's musical theme before a day's recording session. After playing the tune, González explained to Cooder the history of the social club and that the song was the club's "mascot tune". When searching for a name for the overall project, manager Nick Gold chose the song's title. According to Cooder, "It should be the thing that sets it apart. It was a kind of club by then. Everybody was hanging out and we had rum and coffee around two in the afternoon. It felt like a club, so let’s call it that. That’s what gave it a handle."

All in all, this album is a magnificent source for Latin music and maybe and for me it is the best Cuban music recording ever made. You should get it as LP or if you have not a turntable, should get it as CD but absolutely you shold have it.

Buena Vista Social Club Havana'daki aynı adlı kulübün üyelerini ifade eden bir ifadeki bu klüp 40'lı yıllarda müzikal aktiviteleri ile oldukça popüler olmuştur.90'lı yıllarda bu klüp kapandıktan 50 yıl sonra Kübalı müzisyen Juan de Marcos González ve Amerikalı gitarist Ry Cooder Kübalı yerel sanatçılarla ki bazıları zamanında bu kulüpte çalmışlardı kulübün isminden esinlenerek tarihe mal olacak bir projeye imza atarlar.

Buena Vista Social Club ismiyle kayıtlar yapılır ve büyük bir uluslararası başarı getirir, ayrıca Alman yönetmen Wim Wenders Carnegie Hall New York' ta verdikleri ikinci konseri müzisyenlerle Havana'da çektiği belgesel içine alır ki bu filmde Buena Vista Social Club olarak adlandırılır ve en iyi belgesel dalında Oscar' a aday olur, içlerinde en iyi Avrupa yapımı belgesel ödülü de olan pek çok ödül kazanır.

Hem albüm ve hem de filmin başarısı geleneksel Küba müziğine dünyada bir ilgi doğmasına yol açar ve kimi Kübalı müzisyenler bazı solo çalışmalara imza atarlar ve kimi uluslararası sanatçılarla ortak çalışmalar yaparlar.

Bugün Buena Vista Social Club' ın pek çok üyesi hayattadır örneğin trompetçi Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal, Barbatito Torres, tromboncu ve şef Jesus"Aguaje" Ramos gibi ve grubun yeni üyeleri ile dünya turlarına katılmaktadırlar.

Kayıt:

Albüm sadece altı günde kaydedilmiştir ve ondört eserden oluşur, açılış "Chan Chan" iledir Compay Segundo bestesidir ve "La Bayamesa" ile albüm sonlanır, bu geleneksel bir Küba parçasıdır. Kayıtlar sırasında ayrıca Kübalı piyanist Rubén Gonzales in albümü Introducing... Rubén Gonzales' te ortaya çıkmıştır.

"¿Y tú qué has hecho?" 20'li yıllarda Eusebio Delfín tarafından yazılmıştır ve arkadaşı Compay Segundo parçayı seslendirmektedir. Segundo geleneksel bir bariton ikinci ses yorumcusudur ve bu kayıtta her iki seside kullanmıştır. Parça ayrıca Segundo ve Ry Cooder' ın gitar düetini de içermektedir.

"Veinte años" bir bolero  María Teresa Vera tarafından yazılmıştır ve Omara Puıtuendo tarafından Seguno'nun geri bariton vokaliyle okunmaktadır.

"Candela" Faustino Oramas tarafından yazılan seksi imalarla dolu sözlere haiz popüler bir eserdir. Albümde İbrahim Ferrer tarafından seslendirilmektedir.

Albüme adını veren, "Buena Vista Social Club", basçı Cachaíto’nun babası Orestes López tarafından yazılmıştır. Parça Rubén González'in piyano çalışmalarını  da içerir. Parça Gonzales'in kayıt öncesi müziği geliştirme çalışmaları sırasında Codder duyunca kaydedilmiştir. Parçayı çaldıktan sonra Gonzales Cooder'a  Social Club' ın tarihçesini anlatır ve parça albümün maskot çalışması olur.

Sonuç olarak bu albüm Latin müziği için muhteşem bir kaynakça ve belki de ve de bana göre en güzel kayıt Küba müziği için, özellikle LP halini edinin olmazsa CD'sini ama muhakkak edinin.
