Gustavo Dudamel's official debut concert with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein in a performance of Felix Mendelssohn's lilting Symphony No. 3 in A minor `The Scottish' is a complete pleasure .
Dudamel is excited about the quality of sound on vinyl as produced by DG - and the project should take off because the quality of the performance is first rate.
Side one of the LP contains the first two movements and the second side the final two movements. The recording is from a live performance in the Musikverein, in Vienna, Austria so it indeed serves multiple purposes - Gustavo Dudamel's first experience with the Vienna Philharmonic and his first recording of the Scottish symphony. His tempi are brisk, well molded, and there is an obvious mutual respect between the young Dudamel and the venerable Vienna Philharmonic.
The performance of the Scottish symphony by Dudamel and the Vienna Philharmonic is all Mendelssohn could have hoped in communicating his memories and feelings of his travels in Scotland.
