Jane Monheit - Surrender CD

Bu ay ki ikinci albüm yorumumuz Amerikalı caz vokal Jane Monheit'ın Surrender albümü oluyor. Sanatçı 2007 yılında albümü Concord records'tan çıkardı ki bu firma ile SONY ile ayrıldıktan sonra ki ilk çalışmasıdır.

SONY firmasında Taking Chance on Love ve The Season albümlerini evvelce yapmıştı. İlk ki MGM muzikallerinden bir seçki, ikincisi ise bir noel albümü idi.

Monheit kadife tadında yumuşak bir sese sahip olan çok iyi bir çağdaş caz vokal ve bu albümü oldukça güzel ve romantik bir yapıda.

Sanatçı bu albümde Bossa nova stiline ve Brezilya etkileşimlerine kendini açmış ve bana bu noktada 40 yıl öncesinden bir klasik olan Frank Sinatra'nın Antonio Carlos Jobim ile yaptığı Brezilya tarzı caz konsept albümünü anımsatmakta. Monheit bu albümde iki tane Jobim bestesi söylemiş; "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce" ve "Caminhos Cruzados" (sonuncusunda Toots Thielemans sanatçıya armonikasıyla eşlik etmekte), bu besteleri yorumlarken sanatçının tüm benliğini ortay koyduğu anlaşılmakta.

Bir diğer etkileyici eser benim de çok sevdiğim bir standart olan "Moon River". Bu parçada hem orijinal versiyona sadık kalırken hem de işe harika yorumunu katmış, çok etkileyici. Bir dikkat çekici eser Ivan Lins ile harika bir düet yaptığı "Rio De Maio" ve  Sergio Mendes'in "So Many Stars" adlı eserinde yine ortaya Mendes ile beraber harika bir performans ortaya koymuş.

Surrender, Jane Monheit's first with Concord Records finds the velvet-voiced chanteuse in top vocal form, interpreting a selection of pop songs and standards woven together with dreamy bossa nova rhythms.

Before she release in Sony Taking a Chance on Love and The Season. The former is an absolutely sublime collection of standards from MGM musicals, while the latter, a Christmas disc, contains moments of brilliance but stylistically is somewhat disjointed and quite frankly a bit of a mess style-wise.

She's a great singer who seems to struggle with finding her musical "niche." With Surrender, she moves away from the straight pop-jazz style of Taking a Chance on Love, and returns to the Brazilian-influenced, bossa nova style pop that was often evident on her first three albums.

Surrender is so utterly lovely, lush and romantic and seamlessly constructed, it reminded me of the classic Brazilian-style concept album which Frank Sinatra recorded with the inimitable Antonio Carlos Jobim forty years ago.

Given that it is fitting that on Surrender Monheit puts her own spin on two of Jobim's compositions: "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce" and "Caminhos Cruzados" (the latter featuring Toots Thielemans accompanying her on the harmonica).

She turns in an absolutely stunning version of "Moon River" -- Monheit at once makes the song both a tribute to the original version and entirely her own with her pitch-perfect, wistful interpretation.

There is a great duet with Ivan Lins on his composition "Rio De Maio" She's also accompanied by composer Sergio Mendes on "So Many Stars,". Other standouts include the beautiful, lyrical "If You Went Away," "Surrender," which shows off Monheit's vocal range.
