Bu album Bill Evans'ın altta listelenen müzisyenlerle 1976'da kaydettiği bir çalışma ve bu albüm daha çok Bill Evans'ın neyden hoşlandığı ile ilintili bir çalışma. Sanatçı bu çalışma ile Swing köklerine Ray Brown ile birlikte dönmüş albümde sanatçının favori davulcusu Philly Joe Jones ve bir tenor saksafon devi Harold Land yer almakta ki sanatçının tarzı Bill Evans ile çok uyumlu. Kenny Burrell ise albümde harika bir performans sergilemekte gitarıyla özellikle Child Is Born'u dinleseniz zaten başkaca da söze gerek kalmaz.

Bill Evans röportajlarının birinde nefesli sazlarla  ve diğer solistlerle beraber kayıt yapmayı çok sevdiğini belirtir ve bu albümü tüm yaptıkları içinde en gözdesi olarak niteler. Ayrıca kendi albümlerini dinlemekten hoşlanmadığını itiraf ederken çok az albümünü ayrı tuttuğunu belirtir ki onlardan biri de bu albümdür.

This is the album recorded in 1976 by Bill evans with the musicians listed above. This one is more related to what Bill Evans likes and he is back to his swinging roots with Ray Brown,the idol of all bassists that ever played with Evans and his all-time favorite drummer Philly Joe Jones.Harold Land is a tenor giant not heard often enough since his Clifford Brown-Max Roach days and his lyrical style fits well with Evans. Kenny Burrell is at his best on this album,especially on "Child is Born" and that is saying a lot.

In one of his interviews Bill Evans pointed out his love for playing with horns and accompanying other soloists and cited this album as one of his all-time favorites. He confessed to not liking to listen to his own records except for few special ones and included Quintessence on this short list . If you love Evans and if you love mature, swinging jazz, don't hesitate giving Quintessence a chance to enrich your life.
